Forum updates.

xx Updated forum (new look)
May 08, 2022, 12:04:57 AM by Caesar
Hello to all members.

I have updated the forum to the latest version and you may noticed a slightly different look, and...

that is all the change! You should not notice any glitches or obstacles in this new version: business as usual.

I hope you will like it.

xx How well are we doing?

Hello peeps.

Our membership is not growing, that much is clear: the new security features have saved this forum
from a lot of bots/spammers/scams and the sad reality is that no genuine individuals have requested
to join in a very long time.

there is some good news, to some degree, which is the following:

our website may be quiet but the number of views, since its inception in September 2019, is looking healthy
when compared to one of the biggest trading/finance forums out there.

I hear you say: that provides little consolation!

Here are the stats.

TOTAL VIEWS TO DATE since its inception (Sep. 2019): 174029
TOTAL VIEWS divided by number of days (approximated to 800): approx. 217 daily.

TOTAL VIEWS TO DATE since its inception (? 2005): 1360000
TOTAL VIEWS divided by number of days (approximated to 5840): 7.35 daily.

To summarise: one of our biggest competitors has averaged 7.35 daily views in 16 years,
whereas we have averaged 217 daily views in just over 2 years.

Of course there is a flaw in this reasoning: an average or mean is not enough by itself.
However, our data is not sufficient to make a true and more nuanced comparison
with the stats that can be garnered about our competitors, such as you may see here:

On searching for traffic stats on Similarweb, NotTheNoobs does not bring up anything:
we are simply too small to register enough traffic data that could be visible by this service.

To summarise...

We clearly have a problem in membership growth and active participation terms, but
our views stats are perhaps not as unhealthy as to suggest that we should shut down this
whole operation...

xx Website growth considerations.

Hello members!

As I posted in recent months, the contributions from members are what makes or breaks a forum,
thus we are very grateful for all of your interactions on a variety of topics, without which we would
be unable to justify continuing to run this page.

Since I implemented stricter joining protocols for prospective new members, and since my decision
to purge a number of ghost/dormant accounts that had previously got into the system, our membership
growth has completely ground to a halt: most of the new membership lining up for approval on our admin
portal are - I personally check them - hackers from (mostly) Russia who use the same IP addresses multiple
times with different account names.

The choice now is whether we want to compromise our security in order to allow new members, or to maintain
a safer environment with fewer/genuine members: the decision to lean toward the latter means that we may be
lower in membership/posts but this has not stopped guests/traffic on the site, which means that the public does
have some awareness of this content.

Financially we are secure and, other than the webhosting fee, we have no other yearly (or other) expenses; however,
if we decided to generate some kind of income (unlikely) then we could perhaps recover the aforementioned: for this,
we may choose to ask every member to make a donation (with a minimum suggested amount) so as to help with

Our Twitter account has 2,145 followers, even though we are not sure which ones are genuine traders/people: this means that our posts have a decent bit of exposure, though having a dedicated social media strategy would require someone (paid/volunteer) to focus on building that side up from what is a rather low-key effort from me.

If anyone felt that they were up to helping the forum grow by volunteering to, say, dedicate some time to post on our Twitter page, for example, then I would be very happy to hear from / work with you on this.

So long
exclamation New, stricter controls added to joining NTN
October 25, 2021, 07:04:37 PM by Caesar
Hello members (and guests),

a couple of weeks ago I added two filters
to joining Not The Noobs as members:

1) I deleted the One-All Social Log-in, which means
     prospective  members (genuine or fraudulent)
will no longer be able to use various social media
      platforms for joining;

2) I increased the complexity level of the CAPTCHA
security, in order to throw off-piste bots.

Thus far these measures seem to have had
a positive impact, for the regular stream of
fraudulent 'members' has stopped, for now.

xx Website is running again. Apologies to all.
September 19, 2021, 10:01:29 AM by Caesar
Hello peeps,

you may have wondered why you could not access the website in the last week or so.

It turns out that the webhosting renewal fee, which had been paid, had not been processed

correctly, leading to the website being temporarily suspended.

I am pleased to say that we are back on now, and that you should be able to view / post

as normal.

Thanks for your understanding and my apologies for the inconvenience.
xx Members purge.
September 09, 2021, 10:28:30 AM by Caesar
Dear all,

we just purged the site of dormant members
using the criterion of 'no new posts in the last six months':
this has reduced our membership further, from 54 to 37.

If you are reading this and are one of those members, and would like back in, we would be happy to hear from you and reconsider.

xx New members approval: changes implemented from today.
September 05, 2021, 09:13:34 AM by Caesar
Given the constant number of spam/fake accounts signing up as forum 'members'
- often linked to porn sites and probably malware - I made the decision today that

ALL PROSPECTIVE NEW MEMBERS will need to be approved by the site Administrator (that is ...myself).

This will allow me to check out new requests and approve or deny, rather than having to
delete and ban new users once they have already got into the system.

If you are reading this and are a genuine prospective member, do not let it put you off: I will make
sure to respond to your request within a reasonably short time.

I hope that this will further help with keeping spammers, scammers, and cybercriminals off this site.

Thank you.
xx Forum updates: guest viewing limit in place.
August 19, 2021, 02:53:52 PM by Caesar
Hello peeps.

Among a host of updates, there is a new limit imposed on guests:

three views is now the daily limit, after which any guest on the site

will be required to register if he/she wanted to continue viewing this.

We appreciate that this may be counterintuitive but we hope that

this will encourage people to register, which in turn will give them

the chance to like/respond rather than just reading passively.

clip Member privileges change: Hero Members only.
August 19, 2021, 02:50:08 PM by Caesar

From today, it has been decided that you will have extended privileges, including moderation of posts.

Attached are images showing the new privileges (left-hand column with the blue dots).

This is a first step to give forums users more trust in how they can contribute to keeping this

community a safe place for exchanging ideas, and reducing any inappropriate posting.

We hope that you will appreciate this and there will be further changes ahead in this direction.

Many thanks to @Kaitsu  for pointing out this possible change.

If you have any comments, please let me know.
